COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Springfield Fire Department received nearly $4,500 from Missouri State University’s Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity to provide free oxygen safety devices and smoke alarms. The funds were raised during the fraternity’s Fireman’s Challenge fundraiser and will help reduce fire risks for those using home oxygen.  KY3
  • Springfield’s Convoy of Hope (a relief organization) is extending its work by educating farmers to improve practices worldwide. A KY3 report shows how the group continues to feed communities with new farming techniques.  KY3
  • Local berry farms are busy this season with strawberry picking available and upcoming events. Tasty Acres near Fellows Lake is hosting an outdoor yoga and berry-picking event on May 23 while farms in Ozark, Nixa, Republic and Rogersville invite visitors to enjoy fresh produce.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • The New Day Center has served homeless adults for six months and consistently reaches capacity while helping around 700 individuals each month. Community Partnership of the Ozarks will adjust services to keep the center a safe place for those in need.  KY3
  • A Springfield cat rescue took in a rare male calico kitten that is one of only 1 in 3,000 with this marking. The feral stray, hit by a car, is now receiving care as it works toward becoming fully tame.  KY3

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fourteen SPS seniors will graduate on May 16 after completing the Alliance for Healthcare Education pathway that offers certifications to join the medical field. They serve as ambassadors to encourage more students, and the alliance partners SPS, Ozarks Technical, Missouri State and CoxHealth.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Springfield Public Schools and Drury University reported minimal disruption from a hacking attempt on the Canvas platform that shut it down on Thursday, May 7. Drury confirmed that grades and exams remained on schedule while SPS continues to monitor further details.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Missouri State University staff will not get raises next year because enrollment is lower and state funding is flat (staff are upset about pay), according to a May 7 board meeting. The board will review compensation if fall enrollment exceeds projections.  Springfield Daily Citizen

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Logan-Rogersville Fire Protection District is using a new drone to help locate people during water rescues. Battalion Chief Chris Wescoat said the device helped save a lost kayaker in Ozark and will guide plans for spring floods + support mutual aid efforts.  KY3

HEALTH NEWS

  • Cox South Hospital in Springfield received a C grade on safety from Leapfrog on Wednesday. CoxHealth said its new Epic system and ongoing measures aim to boost patient care through improved documentation and teamwork.  KY3

SPORTS NEWS

  • Sydney Lister broke a 22-year-old 800-meter record and won the 1,600 race for the Ozark track team at the conference meet last Wednesday. She will run again at the Sectional 3 meet in Waynesville on May 23 as she prepares to start at Oral Roberts in the fall.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Missouri State University earned over $100,000 in royalty payments from EA Sports College Football 26 as fans frequently selected the Bears; the team ranked 69th among 136 schools received the boost following its debut in the FBS.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Coach Ben Timson built Springfield Catholic girls' soccer from a 1998 start into a powerhouse with 500+ wins (including two state titles) before retiring as head coach in 2024; second-year leader Mackenzie Serrano now leads the team, which will travel on May 14 to face Class 4 Kickapoo.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Ozark School District posted an ad for a new head football coach on Wednesday after Jeremy Cordell resigned from a three-year stint with the Tigers — marking another coaching change in the area ahead of August camp.  Springfield Daily Citizen
