COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local residents are invited to leave a bag of nonperishable food by their mailboxes on Saturday, May 10 when postal workers will collect donations for the 33rd Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive organized by the National Association of Letter Carriers—supported by local charities like Ozarks Food Harvest to help families facing rising grocery costs. CRIME NEWS

  • A Springfield man was arrested on May 1 after he and two others allegedly tricked a victim into letting them tie him to a bed—then beat and robbed him, leaving him with serious injuries; 19-year-old Nathaniel Aiden Pettet now faces charges of first-degree robbery, assault, and kidnapping with a bond hearing set for May 21.  Springfield Daily Citizen

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting May 13, FEMA—together with state and local officials—will begin damage assessments in Greene, Barry, Lawrence, McDonald, Newton, and Washington counties to see if federal funds will be available for repairing storm-damaged roads and bridges. Residents are urged to file insurance claims promptly and seek help from United Way or the Red Cross if needed.  Springfield News-Leader
  • Federal Judge M. Douglas Harpool said Missouri’s SNAP call center delays and denials have persisted since his ruling last year, leaving eligible residents without food aid. The state must meet new benchmarks—such as reducing caller wait times to 20 minutes for 90% of calls—within six months or face further court action.  Springfield News-Leader
  • Springfield’s Department of Environmental Services extended debris drop-off hours by keeping the Yardwaste Recycling Center and Noble Hill Sanitary Landfill open Sunday, May 11 and Monday, May 12 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Organic storm debris is accepted free until further notice — residents should use the proper site for larger items.  KY3

HEALTH NEWS

  • Only 2MG held a summit on May 8 — and is hosting another day today at the Barnett Fine Arts Recital Hall at Evangel University to teach locals about fentanyl dangers and debunk myths for law enforcement. President Brian Townsend said just 2 milligrams of fentanyl can kill a person — and the event features 12 sessions on topics including substance abuse awareness and online trafficking.  KY3
