COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Saturday, groups of volunteers, including Springfield City Councilman Brandon Jenson, helped clean up storm damage in Greene County by addressing fallen trees and minor house damage + Community Organizations Active in Disaster reported that eight to 10 jobs were completed across the area. Future clean-up events are planned, and those interested can contact the OEM office for more details.  KY3
  • More than 400 women ran in the annual Girls on the Run 5K Saturday morning near Missouri State University. Every runner received a commemorative medal to mark the event and celebrate their achievements in building healthy habits.  KY3

CRIME NEWS

  • The Bolivar Police Department is searching for a missing 62 year old woman named Virginia Crain after she was last seen leaving A+J Towing on April 18 and picking up her gold 2004 Oldsmobile van, with officers saying she may be headed to Springfield because of her heart problems, early signs of dementia and multiple scars on her face, back and legs.  KY3

CULTURE NEWS

  • Thousands attended Artsfest on Saturday on Historic Walnut Street in downtown Springfield with live music, food, and booths from more than 100 local artists— the event continues today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a $5 entry fee for visitors age six and older while younger visitors get in free.  KY3

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Missouri State University will confer 2,804 degrees to students at three commencement ceremonies on May 9 at Great Southern Bank Arena. The ceremonies will begin at 9 a.m. for natural and applied sciences and health services, at 1 p.m. for education and the arts, and at 5 p.m. for agriculture and business—featuring speeches by Susan Hardy, Tamia Schiele and retired Sgt. Major Lanny Asepermy.  OzarksFirst.com
  • Danielle O’Neil, a physical education teacher at Sherwood Elementary, was named the 2025-26 Teacher of the Year for Springfield Public Schools on May 2 during Celebrate SPS—hosted by the Foundation for Springfield Public Schools. She will next compete in the regional contest for Missouri State Teacher of the Year.  OzarksFirst.com
  • Springfield-area colleges have begun their graduation season—Evangel University and Mission University celebrated on May 1 and May 2 while Missouri State University will hold ceremonies on May 9 and Ozarks Tech will follow on May 15—continuing a full month of commencements.  Springfield News-Leader

HEALTH NEWS

  • After 40 years of relying on Title X funds, the OACAC Family Planning Clinic now faces a $425,000 shortfall that may force it to close in July if federal funds do not arrive—Title X funds account for about half its yearly budget. The clinic serves low-income and uninsured patients and urges them to receive screenings and treatments while it remains open.  Springfield News-Leader
