ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • John Reppert, owner of Complete Diesel and Auto Repair in Nixa, experienced an EF-0 tornado on Tuesday that tore the roof off his shop and scattered tools and vehicles while he and his two sons took cover—neighbors and local officials helped with immediate recovery efforts and permit processing for repairs. The community's support helped ease the shock as Reppert recovered from the dangerous event.  OzarksFirst.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Drury University will hold a Celebration of Life for longtime professor Rabindra Roy, who died on Feb. 27 and helped start Hem Sheela Model School in India in 1995—he served as a mentor for over 50 years. The event will begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 3 at Stone Chapel and will be followed by a reception at the O’Reilly Enterprise Center with speeches from former presidents.  Springfield News-Leader

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Severe storms toppled the 150-200-year-old Horton Alexander Hackberry tree—the first tree designated under the Tree City USA program—in Jordan Valley Park on Tuesday morning. The tree was partly named for Jan Knauer Horton, the first executive director of the Community Foundation of the Ozarks.  OzarksFirst.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tuesday storms knocked out power for 50,000 homes and businesses in Springfield and left several street lights and traffic signals dark Wednesday morning—one intersection along Sunshine Street at Moore Road remained completely out while another had a blinking red light.  KY3
  • City Utilities of Springfield (CU) is working to restore power after the largest outage since the 2007 ice storm, with 23,000 customers still without power at 11:00 a.m. today. Crews declared an emergency to get mutual aid and warn that the work will take a long time.  OzarksFirst.com
