COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The giving hub outside The Fairbanks at 1126 N. Broadway Ave will be moved 50-feet north soon after permit issues forced its closure - the Drew Lewis Foundation and city officials plan to reposition or rebuild it, with operations resuming within two months.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • The BIG Taste returns today at the Oasis Convention Center, 2550 N. Glenstone Ave. to support youth mentoring through Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ozarks, with more than 15 local restaurants serving food & drinks as guests enjoy raffles, a silent auction, and online participation.  Springfield News-Leader

CULTURE NEWS

  • Cora Scott, head of the Missouri Route 66 Centennial Commission, advises travelers to explore the Mother Road as the centennial festival kicks off Thursday in Springfield. The event offers a chance for locals to unplug and explore a historic route in a fresh way.  KY3
  • Theron Teeter (Too Much), 41, continues to write music and perform after gaining hero status in 2016 for trying to save a child from a fire; although he lives in Texas, he returns to Springfield for work and shows, including a performance at the University Plaza Hotel and Convention Center.  Springfield Daily Citizen

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Community members toured Bingham Elementary today in a final open house before summer demolition. The district will spend $28 million to build a new school at the Cherry Street — Barnes Avenue site for the 2027-2028 school year while students temporarily study at former Jarrett Middle School.  KY3

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents across the northern Ozarks assessed damage after Sunday's hail storms caused harm to windows and vehicles. Phillipsburg homeowner Stephanie Fletcher filed insurance claims, and local broker John Schaeffer advised drivers to check comprehensive coverage—steps meant to prevent total losses.  KY3

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Missouri lawmakers remain divided as the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education seeks an extra $190.6 million for public schools for fiscal year 2027. The legislature will meet in the next two weeks to decide whether to shift Capitol renovation funds so teachers’ programs are not cut & the plan is sent to the governor by May 8.  KY3

  • A Springfield lottery player won $50,000 in the March 21 Powerball drawing when a Quick Pick ticket purchased during an Easter Egg hunt at Walmart (1923 E. Kearney St.) was checked weeks later; the prize has since been claimed.  KY3

  • Six former Missouri State Bears will attend NFL rookie minicamps in the coming weeks. Jacob Clark and Shomari Lawrence join the Raiders plus Jordan Dunbar, Lance Mason, Tahj Chambers and Raylen Sharpe sign free-agent contracts with the Bills, Seahawks and Colts.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Longtime Willard baseball coach Scott McGee will finish his final season as his team chases a district championship, and he will transition to Republic High School as an assistant principal after a storied career with multiple wins with his son Jarrett (who will continue his career at Missouri Southern).  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Former Missouri State quarterback Jacob Clark signed an undrafted free-agent deal with the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday after breaking school records at MSU. His contract adds to a growing list of local players advancing to the NFL.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Republic all-state safety Keiran Govan from Springfield committed to play for Mizzou on Saturday during a live-streamed 7-on-7 tournament in Dallas (he chose the Tigers over Tennessee, Louisville, Iowa State, and Kansas State to leave a legacy in Missouri).  Springfield Daily Citizen
