- ➤ Springfield’s elite met at the James River Club (active from 1900 to the 1940s) on a bluff along the James where they fished, ate and danced, with many guests arriving by train. After the club house burned and the river was dammed to form Lake Springfield, crumbling remains mark the site, and park officials say many old artifacts remind us of the area’s rich past (linking history to today). - ➤ Gov. Mike Kehoe replaced half of Missouri’s State Board of Education by appointing four new members—two of whom have Springfield ties—to boost school accountability and support non-traditional school options.
