COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Amy and Russell Gann opened Riverdale Berry Farm for U-Pick strawberries at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 14 at 889 W. Riverdale Drive; they plan to offer blackberries later this summer.  Springfield Daily Citizen

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A McDonald’s at 528 S. Glenstone Ave. was demolished on April 14 to make way for a new location with a drive-thru as shown by a permit issued on April 10 (which also covers a new LED sign). McDonald’s Real Estate Company will rebuild on the same spot.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • DISH Network pulled KY3, KSPR, and Ozarks CW off service more than a month ago after extending deadlines during severe weather and major events. Gray Media chairman Hilton Howell said DISH rejected proposals and added more outrageous terms, leaving these channels available only on other services.  KY3
  • Torch Electronics asked Springfield businesses on April 10 to suspend operations of its slot machines (VLTs) as it pushes for a regulated framework. By Monday, some outlets turned the machines off while others kept them running.  Springfield Daily Citizen

EDUCATION NEWS

  • BBB Springfield is accepting applications for its Student of Ethics award—a $2,500 scholarship—for high school juniors graduating in spring 2027; required documents must be submitted by May 29 and the winner will be honored on Oct. 27 at the Torch Awards for Ethics banquet.  Springfield News-Leader
  • Missouri State University students will face a roughly 5% tuition increase for the 2026-27 school year as the university tackles financial challenges. The Board of Governors’ Executive Committee will review the fee schedule today at 4 p.m. online.  Springfield Daily Citizen

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The morel mushroom season has returned in the Ozarks as foragers begin hunting early. Conservation officials at Springfield Nature Center warn that false morels (with red, wrinkled caps and fibrous interiors) are poisonous and state parks now limit collecting to 2 gallons per person for personal use.  KY3
  • A new hiking guide helps Springfield residents plan a waterfall day trip to Smith Creek Preserve in NW Arkansas, a two-hour drive south. The guide outlines trails to QuiVaLa Elise Falls and Twin Falls and notes that spring brings greening trees & wildflowers to the area.  Springfield Daily Citizen

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On April 13, the Missouri Senate passed a scaled-back bill sponsored by Sen. Bean that creates a five-member appeals board for MSHSAA athletes to improve fairness in game decisions & address prior concerns. The bill now moves to the House for further review.  Springfield News-Leader
  • Springfield police have urged motorcyclists and drivers to stay alert as riding season begins and warn that leaving wet grass clippings on roads creates hazards for small vehicles + they offer a free motorcycle safety course starting Saturday, with applications due by noon Thursday.  KY3

HEALTH NEWS

  • A rescue organization partnered with a veterinary clinic in Ozark to vaccinate unsheltered dogs and those owned by low-income families for the Stop Parvo project on April 14. The effort aimed to protect pets from disease.  KY3

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • City council will vote Monday on a zoning change for a 4-story, 198-unit apartment complex near the medical mile that includes parking, garages, and a swimming pool. Neighbors say the plan does not fit the quiet community and want a smaller building design to ease traffic.  KY3
  • Phillips and Ferguson revived Rockwood Motor Court on West College Street in late 2019, restoring unique rock cottages and a converted gas station lodging to preserve Route 66 history; it earned a (Historic Hotels of America) designation that now attracts visitors from near and far.  KSMU

  • Former Nixa wrestling star Zan Fugitt, a three-time state champion who shined at Wisconsin, committed to Mizzou Monday — he has two remaining years of eligibility and looks forward to boosting the Tigers.  Springfield Daily Citizen
