CRIME NEWS

  • A federal judge sentenced Delante Leon Worsham, 40, to 30 years in federal prison without parole for his leadership role in a fentanyl trafficking ring in Springfield — a case linked to the overdose deaths of at least two people in southwest Missouri.  KY3
  • Dakota Colton Nation, 21, was arrested after a shooting on April 3 near Kearney Street and National Avenue in north Springfield—two juveniles suffered nonfatal gunshot wounds during a car dispute—and he faces charges of third-degree domestic assault and third-degree kidnapping with a bond hearing set for April 16.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • A Georgia man, Badetito O. Obafemi, was sentenced in federal court to 24 months in prison without parole, $311,520 in restitution, and three years of supervised release for his role in an online romance scam that targeted elderly victims in Taney County, Northfield and Bergen County — he pleaded guilty to money laundering charges in April 2024.  OzarksFirst.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Voters in Willard passed a $30 million school bond and a $0.22 tax levy transfer on April 9th to fund safety upgrades, building improvements on four older schools, and new turf fields for athletic activities—Superintendent Eric Wilken said the funds will repair roofs, windows, and flooring while enhancing school security as the district thanked the community for their trust.  OzarksFirst.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Missouri House lawmakers passed a bill to regulate video lottery games in licensed retail spots by a 74-70 vote but it still needs eight votes to move to the Senate—lobbyists on both sides expect a tough fight as supporters say the bill will generate money for education and protect kids from gambling—while critics warn it could lead to more gambling expansion.  Springfield News-Leader
  • Springfield City Council announced three finalists for city manager: David Cameron, Bob Cowell, and Brian Weiler. The candidates will participate in virtual town hall meetings and community stakeholder interviews from April 15 to April 16—which will lead to the council's final decision.  KY3

HEALTH NEWS

  • According to The Arc of the Ozarks, over 40,000 children in the past ten years have been diagnosed with autism in Springfield but many still wait years for a diagnosis due to a shortage of services—KY3’s Jackie Garrity and Tim Dygon explained the growing challenges. This situation highlights the urgent need for more local autism services.  KY3
