- ➤ Brian Fogle writes about how CASA volunteers support foster children in our community—over 500 were assisted in 2024 and a Kid’s Clubhouse served more than 2,000 kids. - ➤ Starting April 11, the Springfield Greene County Park Board will offer several three-day American Red Cross lifeguard training courses that combine classroom and pool lessons to prepare new lifeguards from April to June—training costs up to $200 and offers scholarship opportunities. - ➤ Progress on the new Pipkin Middle School continues as demolition of the Assemblies of God properties is slated to finish by May 16; Springfield Public Schools officials expect the advancing project to meet a 480-day schedule so that students can soon move directly into the new building, with benefits including lower utility costs from the old facility. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ A wild migratory Canada goose tested positive for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza at Dickerson Park Zoo — zookeepers closed some bird exhibits including the flamingo aviary to protect the animals while confirming that the virus is not a risk to people.
