COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Meteorologist Ron Hearst, a longtime fixture on KY3, announced he will retire later this summer after nearly 40 years of forecasting in Springfield. The station will soon reveal his final on-air date and he plans to continue teaching weather and consulting in the Ozarks.  Springfield Daily Citizen

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area surpassed 500,000 residents when March 26 estimates showed 500,694 people as of July 1, 2025, marking a key economic milestone that could boost local business interest & attract new opportunities.  Springfield Daily Citizen

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Springfield Public Schools is bracing for lean budgets as funding from Proposition C changes and district leaders said staff cuts and reduced supply budgets may be needed — the final budget will be released on June 23.  KY3
  • Governor Mike Kehoe’s A-F grading plan for public schools, announced in January, is facing bipartisan Senate criticism for relying too heavily on outdated tests. Lawmakers say the plan, set for a June 30 rollout, may not secure legislative approval.  KY3
  • Missouri State University is reaffirming accreditation as Higher Learning Commission peer reviewers visit campus on Monday, March 30 and Tuesday, March 31 to meet with faculty, staff and students. Open forums at the Plaster Student Union Theater will cover key review criteria.  Springfield Daily Citizen

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City Utilities announced that starting April 1, residential electricity bills will increase by about $14 per month due to rising fuel costs & a previously approved 3.9% rate adjustment. The changes follow an $8 million shortfall incurred during last winter's severe weather.  KY3
  • Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway sent cease-and-desist letters to 33 businesses over deceptive hemp-derived products—including Swin Dispensaries in Nixa and a Springfield-area retailer—as part of a statewide crackdown that began last November and warns of legal action if the companies do not comply.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Local driver Vickie Hicks says the markings on the diverging diamond near CoxHealth Medical Center South are hard to see when it rains because water covers the reflective glass beads. MoDOT has used larger beads since 2015 to improve visibility, but winter plowing damages them until re-striping in spring.  Springfield Daily Citizen

  • The Springfield-Greene County Health Department confirmed a rabies case in a skunk on March 27. Residents are advised to avoid contact with wild animals and keep pets vaccinated (CDC guidelines).  Springfield News-Leader

  • Hayden Mays, a Nixa senior on the track and field team, threw the nation’s fourth best discus last Friday at a meet after ranking top 25 nationally last year — his performance positions him as a strong contender for more accolades this season.  KY3
