CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Police are searching for a masked and armed man wanted for robbing Walgreens at Battlefield and Campbell at 9 a.m. today—he threatened a worker with a gun and demanded cash while officers review surveillance for a better description. KY3
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Springfield Public Schools School Board approved a plan to build a new Pershing Middle School just east of the current facility at Cherokee and Ventura, letting students stay in the old building until the new one is ready. The $58.5 million project will include a storm shelter, track — and a dedicated bus line. KY3
- ➤ The Springfield Public School Board approved a $37.5 million bid from Crossland Construction to build the new Pipkin Middle School at 3207 East Pythian Street. School leaders say the firm will complete the project in 480 days, saving $60,000 by finishing nine months early—and if the school is not ready by August, the contractor will face daily penalties. - ➤ The Springfield school board awarded a $37.5 million contract to Crossland Construction to build the new Pipkin Middle School in 480 days—nearly nine months faster than other bids. The project, located on an 8.86-acre lot purchased from the Assemblies of God, is planned to serve 550 students and help cut utility costs by allowing early relocation from the existing facility. - ➤ Starting Wednesday, the Springfield Police Department began enforcing a city ordinance that may result in vehicles being towed if they drive on city streets with missing, invalid or expired license plates while parked cars are exempt. If a car is towed, the owner must obtain a release form from the police department using a government-issued photo ID, proof of registration and proof of ownership. KY3
- ➤ An investigation by Ozarks First Investigates found that school board candidates raised nearly twice as much money—almost $492,000 in total—compared to city council candidates who raised about $224,000 ahead of the April election. The report noted that candidates like Gail Smart and Sarah Hough received significant donations and revealed ties to local landlord Gordon Elliott that have sparked concerns about campaign influence.
