COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Springfield Tech Council is hosting Springfield Tech Week from March 23-27 to boost local tech skills and foster connections with events including a software development challenge, project showcase, and a Wednesday conference that expects 700 attendees (some sessions require pre-registration).  KY3
  • Friends of Abilities First will host the annual Silver Strands fundraiser on March 27, honoring Sen. Lincoln Hough for his work supporting people of all abilities at Hickory Hills Country Club in Springfield. Rep. Melanie Stinnett and Rep.   • Mr. Googoriums Movie Emporium opens today inside Bookmarx at 325 E. Walnut. Owner Joshua Arnett said the shop offers DVDs + VHS tapes on flexible rental plans—$2 per film or $8 per month—to bring back the joy of browsing films for all movie fans.  KSMU
  • Gray Media’s KY3 and KSPR were dropped from DISH Network nearly two weeks ago after negotiations failed over a fair market rate, leaving viewers without local channels. The stations urge Dish subscribers to call and contact Dish + explore alternative providers for their local news.  KY3

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Montclair Senior Living Facility hosted a ceremony honoring WWII veteran Jack Hamlin on Saturday, March 21. The event celebrated his Coast Guard service during D-Day and his rescue efforts for survivors from the sinking of the SS Léopoldville — along with honoring 23 other veterans.  Springfield News-Leader

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Springfield Environmental Services is offering public tours of Noble Hill Sanitary Landfill in April. The guided tours run from 10 a.m. to noon on April 11, 16, and 22 and depart from Busch Municipal Building's parking lot (840 N. Boonville Ave.) with limited space available.  KY3
  • Some residents reported a strong odor near Wilson’s Creek by the wastewater plant on March 6, but a reporter found no bad smell during a walk, and city officials said weather and waste variations can cause normal treatment odors as they work with haulers to lessen them.  Springfield Daily Citizen

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Springfield voters will decide in August whether the Hotel of Terror stays or moves amid a 13-year dispute between owner Sterling Mathis and city officials working on a project to replace a 100-year-old bridge — Councilmember Brandon Jenson said the deal must be fair for all.  KY3

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former local standouts Trevon Brazile (Kickapoo) and Kael Combs (Nixa) advance to the Sweet 16 after helping Arkansas and Iowa win key NCAA games on Thursday; Brazile’s team will face Arizona on March 26 at 8:45 p.m. in San Jose while Combs’ team sets to play Nebraska in Houston.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Springfield Cardinals will host a Monday night game at Hammons Field against the St. Louis Cardinals, their first face-off in nearly 10 years. The park opens at 2:30 p.m. & the game starts at 6:05 p.m.  KY3
