COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Springfield-based Convoy of Hope wrapped up relief work in Michigan and is now assisting tornado-damaged areas in Indiana and Illinois (relying on strong local volunteers to deliver supplies) as two people have died there.  KY3
  • Better Block SGF named Rachael Walsh as its first executive director; she began on March 9 and was announced on March 16. Walsh (former board member) brings nearly 10 years of nonprofit leadership to guide future placemaking projects in Springfield.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • A small tornado damaged a barn & spooked the donkeys at the Logans' Willow Springs farm Sunday before Lori and Andy Logan inspected the damage via solar-powered security cameras. The couple, who own Pizza Americana and serve as local fire chief respectively, reported all animals safe and minor roof damage.  KY3

  • On March 16, a young entrepreneur who bought the 7.3-acre former Affordable Towing lot on Florida Street improved its east building + now he will work with the city to divide the property and sell 4 acres for flex warehousing while his auto business also offers online car parts.  Springfield Daily Citizen

CULTURE NEWS

  • Route 66's centennial spotlights The Green Book (a travel guide from the Jim Crow era that helped Black travelers find safe stops). University of New Mexico Professor Marsha Hardeman recalled its importance for planning secure trips, reflecting its lasting cultural impact.  KY3
  • Dickerson Park Zoo (a local attraction) introduced Monty the python in this week’s The Wild Side (its wildlife education feature) on Tuesday, Mar. 17, giving visitors a new chance to see a live reptile.  KY3

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On the MSU campus near Craig Hall, a small structure on Grand Street has been set up as a test of building materials for the new Judith Enyeart Reynolds Performing Arts Complex. The display will be updated and removed when construction finishes by August for fall semester.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Stephanie Matthews is named executive director of the Ozarks Tech Foundation and will lead fundraising for scholarships and innovative programs at Ozarks Technical Community College today (she brings over two decades of experience from higher education and business development).  Springfield News-Leader

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Springfield crews collected 2 tons of litter along Kansas Expressway and Highway 13 as the city prepares for Route 66 centennial events from Apr. 30 through May 2 (funded by a landfill fee) while beautification efforts include planting 10,000 tulip bulbs (supported by local partners).  Springfield News-Leader

  • Strafford High School girls basketball will play for another state championship in Columbia later this week. Coach Chris Neyenhouse and head coach Dustin Larsen are preparing the team for the Final 4.  KY3
  • Willard senior Levi Hilton, named athlete of the week for his baseball team, fuels his pitching with a unique steak-eating routine as Coach Scott McGee explained he even keeps steak bites in his back pocket during games — a method that keeps him ready for the mound.  KY3
