ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Springfield police closed the southbound lanes of Highway 65—between Chestnut Expressway and Sunshine Street—after a Sunday motorcycle crash left one person with serious injuries.  KY3

CULTURE NEWS

  • In March 1950, an alley cat named Ali sat 30 feet high in an ash tree on the Hall family property in Springfield, drawing local media attention as some speculated she took shelter from hydrogen bomb fears—though her owner, Zena Palmer, later confirmed she was a house cat. On the fourth day, Ali left the tree and was quickly reunited with her owner.  Springfield News-Leader

EDUCATION NEWS

  • School districts in tornado-hit Ozarks have set plans for classes this week. West Plains R-7 opens today with help for students and buses serving South Fork Elementary until power is restored—while Bakersfield holds a drop-in day and Rolla Public Schools has canceled classes until repairs are made, with a tentative return on March 31.  KY3
  • Springfield voters will select two school board members on April 8 from four candidates—Kelly Byrne, Sarah Hough, David Myers, and Gail Smart—and the winners will serve three-year terms with the new board joining current members to set policies and manage district spending. Early campaign finance reports show that Smart led fundraising while several local groups endorsed candidates.  Springfield News-Leader

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Springfield is starting a month-long road resurfacing project Monday, March 17 — it will fix about 16 miles of road starting with Grand Street between Kansas Expressway and John Q. Hammons Parkway. Crews will give property owners 48 hours notice and use funds from the 2024 Surface Transportation Block Grant and a local 1/8-cent tax — the project is estimated to cost about $3.8 million.  KY3
  • City Utilities of Springfield went to Poplar Bluff Sunday morning to help restore power after an EF-3 tornado struck Butler County. The National Weather Service said the tornado killed one person and injured several others while 1,117 customers lost power & the crews worked through the Missouri Public Utility Alliance mutual aid program.  KY3

SPORTS NEWS

  • Missouri State lost in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament semifinals and will host its second Women’s Basketball Invitational game on Thursday against Oral Roberts at Great Southern Bank Arena. The game will decide who meets Minnesota or Toledo on Sunday — the Lady Bears hope to bounce back.  Springfield Daily Citizen
