COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Springfield’s Convoy of Hope is sending crews to areas in Missouri and Arkansas (including Hartville, West Plains, Van Buren, the Bootheel, Rolla, St. Louis, and Mountain Home) after severe storms hit Friday night and caused widespread damage with 11 deaths, including 3 in Bakersfield. Crews will deliver relief supplies and assess local needs as the state emergency operations center remains active. KY3
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On March 15th, 2020, Officer Christopher Walsh and three others were fatally shot at the Kum & Go on E. Chestnut Expressway by Joaquin Roman—who later died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound—and the Springfield Police Department’s honor guard cleaned the memorial in February 2024 to honor their memory. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ In downtown Springfield the city began the first phase of the Renew Jordan Creek project to expose a buried creek and improve water quality—expected to finish by the end of 2026—with some road closures planned during construction. Springfield News-Leader
- ➤ Sen. David Gregory sponsored Senate Bill 71 to offer free tuition for first responders and their dependents to boost recruitment and retention in public safety. The Senate passed the bill on Thursday—now it heads to the House for their review. OzarksFirst.com
- ➤ Missouri lawmakers are on spring break and will return next Monday to work on tax cuts that include a bill to end capital gains taxes—letting people keep more money from asset sales. Lawmakers must pass bills by May 16th, and critics say the proposed cuts may favor billionaires and corporations. KY3
- ➤ Springfield will start a three point eight million dollar road resurfacing project on Monday, March 17 that will repair 16 miles of roads including segments on Grand Street, Division Street, and Republic Road. Drivers should expect single-lane closures and flaggers for traffic control—property owners will be notified 48 hours before work begins on their segment. Springfield News-Leader
