COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Empower: Abilities will expand its services this summer by moving to an old bank building at the corner of S. Campbell Ave and Walnut Lawn. The facility will offer 20,000 sqft to boost community visibility and improve access with its location on a main bus line.  KY3
  • Rescue One opened a new shelter yesterday to care for animals that are not yet ready for adoption. The center aims to provide dedicated support and prepare these animals for future adoption in Springfield.  KY3

BUSINESS NEWS

  • New owners of Ebbets Field will reopen the historic restaurant on March 27 at 1027 E. Walnut St., featuring a fresh logo and hometown spirit (the restaurant closed in Jan. 2024 after a 29-year run) (a blend of tradition and change).  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Screaming Mary’s dance club will open at 322 South Ave next to Hour House with a grand opening planned for early April — the HH Complex expansion will feature drag shows, kitchen service and add 15 to 20 new downtown jobs.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Loomi Candle Bar in downtown will close at the end of April after its lease was not renewed at 400 W. Walnut St.; owner Katie Putthoff announced the shutdown on March 3 via Facebook & thanked customers for their support.  Springfield Daily Citizen

CULTURE NEWS

  • A temporary Revolutionary War exhibit is opening in celebration of America’s 250th at Greene County Historic Courthouse. The event, featuring interactive displays, speeches and traditional performances, will be held on March 8 from 2 to 4 p.m. (940 N. Boonville Ave.)  Springfield News-Leader
  • A property owner painted over a mural in downtown last weekend to prepare for a new patriotic mural representing his veteran business, From Military To Millionaire, which will move in in May. Local arts leaders have launched fundraising efforts to recreate the lost piece on another building (community support growing).  Springfield Daily Citizen

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Missouri House has proposed a bill that makes driver education mandatory for high school graduation starting the 2027-28 school year — public schools will offer free classroom instruction on road safety without requiring behind-wheel practice.  KY3

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Severe weather season is here and safety experts advise Springfield residents to review their tornado plans (including emergency alerts and safe spots) as families prepare for upcoming storms. Local insurance providers recommend verifying coverage and assembling emergency kits for extra protection.  KY3

HEALTH NEWS

  • At CoxHealth hospitals in Springfield and Branson, EPIC went live on Sunday, Mar. 1. Patients reported longer wait times and medication errors as staff adjust, while leaders say the update will improve care and request patience during the transition.  KY3
  • Allergy season has begun in Springfield and flu cases are rising as local health expert Cindy Griessel (physician assistant at Mercy) advises residents to monitor their symptoms closely.  KY3
  • With daylight saving time set to start Sunday at 2 a.m., the Missouri State Highway Patrol warns drivers to get extra sleep as studies show the one-hour shift may spike drowsy driving risks (sleep experts advise napping or switching drivers if needed).  KY3
  • St. Louis Children’s at CoxHealth will open its new pediatric hospital on the CoxHealth Medical Center South campus in March to offer advanced neonatal and pediatric intensive care from WashU Medicine physicians. A specialty care center is planned for summer.  Springfield News-Leader
  • Missouri State University cut the ribbon on its Collaborative Care Clinic last month at Ann Kampeter Health Sciences Hall, creating a centralized facility for patient care and student learning (clinic hours are Mon. and Fri. 8 a.m.–5 p.m. and Tues.–Thurs. 8 a.m.–8 p.m.).  KSMU
