COMMUNITY NEWS

  • KY3’s Leigh Moody featured some of the longest-residing animals at the C.A.R.E. shelter in Springfield (highlighting their extended care) on Feb. 25. The digital extra offers a unique look at these animals and their stories.  KY3
  • Springfield has earned its 15th consecutive Bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community designation from the League of American Bicyclists, showing its commitment to biking safety, infrastructure, and education. City agencies plan to improve low-stress routes through its UnGap the Map initiative (their next frontier).  KY3
  • Funeral arrangements for Christian County deputies Gabriel Ramirez and Michael Hislope will be held at James River Church in Ozark, with public visitation Friday from 5-8 p.m. and funeral services Saturday at 1 p.m.  Springfield Daily Citizen

CULTURE NEWS

  • Missouri’s State Historical Society is celebrating 100 years of Route 66 with exhibits and a traveling display scheduled for communities statewide. A new exhibition is open at its Columbia headquarters and Springfield will host the Centennial National Kick-Off on April 30.  Springfield News-Leader

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Springfield Public Schools named Josh Lollis, Hillcrest assistant principal, as the new principal for Parkview High School; he will assume his role on July 1 as Megan Brown transitions to a new SPS position.  Springfield News-Leader
  • Missouri State University will award its 25th honorary doctorate to alumna Mimi Garstang during spring commencement ceremonies. The Board of Governors approved the honor after recommendations by the Faculty Senate and President Richard Williams.  Springfield News-Leader

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • SOFOs Power postponed the public hearing for its proposed Battery Energy Storage System from its initial March 2 date to April 6 at the Greene County Commission meeting. The company plans to build the facility at (4873 N. Rocky Lane) in northern Greene County, and the final decision is pending.  KY3
  • State officials urge residents to prepare this Severe Weather Preparedness Week after last year's tornado deaths; a statewide drill is set for 11 a.m. March 4 - when NOAA Weather Radios activate and sirens sound, prompting everyone to practice sheltering in a safe interior room.  Springfield News-Leader
