CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Missouri State University is celebrating Chinese New Year with free cultural activities on the fourth floor of Pummill Hall from Feb. 12 to today. The event includes tea culture, dragon & lion dances, a dumpling workshop, and hands-on activities to mark the Year of the Horse. Springfield News-Leader
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ The U.S. economy added 120,000 jobs in January, and Springfield’s Missouri Job Center reports over 550 openings as local companies restart seasonal and service hiring after a slow fourth quarter (including roles in landscaping and construction). KY3
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Missouri lawmakers are debating proposals to expand school choice by easing enrollment in charter, public, and private schools—while some favor tighter regulation. The discussions occur during the current legislative session. KY3
- ➤ Springfield Public Schools has named Doug Van Zyl as the new deputy superintendent; he will begin on July 1 (bringing over 30 years of educational leadership from Missouri, Iowa, and Minnesota) as he replaces Travis Shaw. Springfield News-Leader

- ➤ Springfield Planning and Zoning Commission approved a zoning change for the corner of Grant and Grand (part of the Grant Avenue Parkway project) that could allow a multi-story apartment with a food court; City Council will hold a public hearing on March 9 before a final decision. KY3

- ➤ James Van Der Beek (aged 48) died after battling colorectal cancer, raising local awareness about the importance of early detection. Health officials encourage residents to seek medical care if symptoms persist. KY3
- ➤ Children’s Mercy has named veteran pediatrician Dr. John Burson as medical director of its Mercy partnership while he continues caring for patients as a new pediatric outpatient facility under construction on Mercy South campus is set to open in December. Springfield News-Leader
REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ A new building for six businesses is under construction at Sunshine Town Centre east of Target behind Olive Garden. The 31,955 sqft structure on a 5-acre site developed by Springfield West Partners will lease at $35 to $75 per sqft, and tenants have not yet been announced. Springfield Daily Citizen

- ➤ Greenwood head coach Jay Osborne, a Sports Hall of Fame coach, is leading the Blue Jays (16-8) with passion after replacing Darren Taylor last summer. The team will play in the District 10 tournament on Feb. 24 at Seymour. Springfield Daily Citizen
- ➤ Missouri State baseball enters Conference USA today at Louisiana-Lafayette with a focus on deep pitching and tougher competition, aiming for an NCAA Tournament spot as Coach Joey Hawkins said the team is ready for the challenge. Springfield Daily Citizen
