COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Habitat for Humanity of Springfield hosts the Tool Belts and Bow Ties gala on March 5 from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Oasis Hotel and Convention Center to raise funds for a new home for the Haskett family. Sponsorships are open until Feb. 13 (inspired by Dockside Dreams).  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Trappers in Highlandville rescued a dog that had been seen for over a year and its transformation shocked the local rescuers + onlookers.  KY3
  • KY3 meteorologists will return for the KY3 Weather Tour this spring, stopping in Cabool on March 5, Camdenton on March 19, Republic on March 26, and Forsyth on April 9. Visitors may enjoy trivia contests—free bike helmets and live broadcasts will also feature.  KY3

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Patrick Netthongkome Jr., owner of Springfield Thai Express at 2113 West Republic Road, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy earlier this month in U.S. Bankruptcy Court (the filing names several creditors) and the process may take three to six months.  KY3

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students attended a Youth Empowerment Project event on Feb. 4 at Drury University, where the Community Foundation of the Ozarks presented leadership, philanthropy and wellness sessions. They heard Superintendent Grenita Lathan speak on empathetic leadership and toured the campus (about 90 students participated).  Springfield News-Leader
  • Springfield Public Schools is improving teacher retention by boosting staff compensation, benefits and professional development. In August, a pep rally at Great Southern Bank Arena will gather over 3,000 employees as the district prepares for collective bargaining and new budget plans.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Missouri State University's School of Accountancy was renamed the Pendleton Family School of Accountancy after alumnus Dick Pendleton donated seven figures at Glass Hall on Monday to boost scholarships and faculty training — graduate student Isaac Moon helped introduce the gift.  Springfield Daily Citizen

HEALTH NEWS

  • Skunk mating season is here as experts warn pet owners to watch for signs like stamping (a signal to back away) and tail raising, and advise keeping pets leashed and vaccinated throughout March. The Department of Conservation also recommends removing food sources to reduce skunk visits.  KY3
