- ➤ The Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland will begin selling cookies in Springfield on Feb. 1 with favorites like Thin Mints, Samoas, and a new flavor called Exploremores available (see cookie finder for details). Springfield News-Leader
- ➤ The Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce selected Doug Pitt (founder of Care to Learn) as 2026 Springfieldian at its meeting on Jan. 30, honoring his business ventures and philanthropic work. His leadership continues to shape local growth and community achievement. Springfield News-Leader
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ At the Barry County jail in Cassville, a Community Care Coalition program that began in 2025 is offering GED and life skills classes to inmates, and early reports show nearly 80 percent fewer fights (a sign of improved behavior as they prepare for life outside). KY3
- ➤ Teacher Cyndy Cobb from Ozark South Elementary was named the first winner of KY3 Teacher of the Month award today and will receive a $500 Visa gift card and a $100 voucher to Jimm’s Steakhouse — an honor given as she plans to retire at the end of the school year. KY3
- ➤ The Discovery Center of Springfield was named Missouri’s only STEM innovator by NASA, receiving $250,000 to develop a classroom curriculum and Moon-to-Mars exhibit; the project will help students prepare for careers in aerospace and manufacturing. KY3
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Cattle ranchers have struggled since July amid a drought that left Springfield over a foot below normal rainfall, as 7 inches of snow (yielding half an inch of water) eased little of the shortage. Rogers Cattle Company sheltered with old hay and provided vaccinations for calves challenged by dusty air. KY3
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Missouri received $800 million from the Infrastructure and Jobs Act to boost broadband for over 200,000 underserved homes and businesses — a step to close the digital divide in both rural and urban areas. Director BJ Tanksley said the Office of Broadband is taking action. KY3
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Springfield Fire Department is offering free hands-only CPR training each Saturday in February to honor American Heart Month at the Botanical Center, Oak Grove Community Center, Library Center Auditorium, and Library Station Frisco Room. Registration is encouraged and participants should download the Pulse-Point Respond app. KY3
- ➤ The recent snowfall has brightened the Ozarks, but its UV reflection may cause photokeratitis (a painful sunburn to the eyes). Dr. Lucas Lenci of the Missouri Eye Institute advises wearing sunglasses outdoors while driving or shoveling for eye protection (as experts recommend). KY3
