CULTURE NEWS

  • Springfield Little Theatre dominated the 2025 BroadwayWorld Kansas City Regional Awards by winning 15 honors including Favorite Local Theatre (announced Jan. 15). The accolades highlight the strong local talent and volunteer effort in our arts community.  Springfield Daily Citizen

EDUCATION NEWS

  • School officials in Springfield will decide by Sunday whether to cancel classes on Monday after forecasts predict heavy snow & extreme cold that may make travel unsafe. If canceled, students will not have to complete AMI packets.  Springfield News-Leader

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Heavy snow is expected in the coming hours in Springfield, and residents are advised to clear sidewalks, protect natural gas meters (using gentle methods) and keep fire hydrants clear to allow quick emergency access.  KY3

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MoDOT crews began 24-hour road coverage Friday night to prepare for inches of snow expected this weekend. In Springfield, teams prioritized busy routes and calibrated salt use to ease environmental impact (using 1,400 plows and 2,400 drivers statewide).  KY3
  • On Jan. 22, the city demolished a dilapidated house at 219 S. Broadway Ave (neighbors had long complained about squatters and drug activity). Owner Stan Adam said he cared about the community but lacked funds to make the repairs.  Springfield Daily Citizen
  • Polk County’s new 911 center opened in August and dispatchers are now ready for winter weather emergencies. The facility holds seven call takers in its main room and a training room adds space for two more dispatchers (with sleeping areas for four staff) to ensure rapid response during storms.  KY3
  • Pending City Council approval, $30 million in sales tax revenue will fund Phase 2 of the Springfield Art Museum's renovation & expansion, adding gallery space and upgraded facilities.
