COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Six extra cold weather shelters will open in Springfield this weekend when temperatures drop below 32 degrees, providing a safe space with extended hours at New Day on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. (Volunteers are needed for overnight shifts.)  KSMU
  • World War II Navy veteran Ed Miller will turn 100 on Sunday, Jan. 25. CULTURE NEWS

  • The Singing Doctors, Springfield physicians known for humorous musical parodies from 1958 to 1989, raised funds to support local medical student scholarships and contributed over $300,000 in aid. EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Springfield Board of Education extended Superintendent Grenita Lathan's contract through the 2028-29 school year after a unanimous closed meeting vote highlighted improved academics, graduation rates, attendance, and community programs.   • The school board unanimously extended Superintendent Grenita Lathan’s contract through the 2028-29 school year after noting academic gains and strong community ties; she has led SPS since July 2021 (the decision was made in a closed session).  Springfield News-Leader
  • Springfield Public Schools announced that GO CAPS, a career readiness program offering hands-on business experience and mentorship, will close at the end of the school year. Students were informed of the decision on Jan. 13 and now face losing unique opportunities.  Springfield Daily Citizen

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Meteorologists in Springfield say between 6 and 12 inches of snow will fall from Friday night through Sunday as snow begins Saturday. Wind chills are expected to drop to 17 below zero and make travel hazardous on smaller roads.  Springfield News-Leader

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City, CU and county officials are bracing for up to 14 inches of snow and bitter cold this weekend by activating crews at midnight Friday to clear roads and protect utilities. Crisis shelters have boosted capacity with 128 extra beds for 311 people + 25 pets; volunteers are still needed.  Springfield News-Leader
  • Missouri Gov. Kehoe declared a State of Emergency as more than a foot of snow is predicted for southern Missouri starting late Friday night into Saturday. Residents are urged to stay informed and plan ahead to safely manage the heavy winter weather.  KY3

HEALTH NEWS

  • Community Blood Center of the Ozarks is urging donors to give blood ahead of a winter storm as supplies run low. The Thomson Donor Center (open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. today) offers a $10 Walmart e‑gift card and a chance to win VISA gift cards to support area hospitals.  KY3
  • A study from the University of Cincinnati shows that when couples agree on money matters, men's work satisfaction in two-income households is higher. Researchers found that only moderate financial alignment reduces job fulfillment, suggesting couples discuss debt early to avoid tension.  KY3

  • Missouri State beat New Mexico State 84-75 on Thursday night after Keith Palek III scored 26 points and grabbed six rebounds — the Bears built a 23-6 lead in the first half before holding on.  KY3
