EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kiwanis International, a Springfield nonprofit, reminds Springfield Public Schools students and parents that the free clothing bank is available on designated Thursdays, with the next opening at Study Alternative School on Jan. 22. Students must be present to try on shoes (parents can shop with a student ID number).  KY3
  • The Springfield Fire Department has launched monthly story times for kids at Station 3-14 (Discovery Center) to teach fire safety with interactive demos. Sessions run on the third Friday of each month from 10:30 to 11 a.m.  KY3
  • Australia has enacted a law banning children under 16 from having accounts on major social platforms & Missouri educators are discussing similar limits, including cell phone bans, as tech companies push back over age verification. The move aims to reduce cyberbullying and cut excessive screen time.  KY3

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Mike Kehoe announced that the NTIA approved Missouri’s plan to award over $814 million to bring high-speed internet to more than 200,000 underserved locations, with network providers given four years to complete the expansion. The Office of Broadband Development will manage the project through new provider agreements.  KY3
  • The Missouri Department of Conservation is proposing changes to hunting rules by removing antler point limits and CWD zones while keeping mandatory testing in place. The public comment period opens today and runs through Valentine's Day, and approved changes will take effect at the end of June.  KY3
  • The historic Jefferson Avenue Footbridge was reassembled on Jan. 8 but work continues on painting, decking, and lighting (the project cost is about $13 million). City officials plan a full reopening in spring with a May 2 ribbon-cutting ceremony as part of the Route 66 Centennial kickoff.  Springfield News-Leader
  • Sunshine Street Bridge reopened to traffic just after 5 a.m. Thursday. The five month project replaced the 60 year old bridge and improved pedestrian access on the stretch between Scenic Avenue and Kansas Expressway.  KY3

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • The HBA Home and Outdoor Living Show will be held at Wilson Logistics Arena this weekend with 150 home improvement vendors and seminars. It runs (today: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.).  KY3
  • Chef Daniel Pliska shares a chili con queso recipe that brings restaurant-style nacho sauce home with fresh peppers and a homemade spice blend. The recipe lets home cooks adjust the heat using various chilis (such as poblano or chipotle) for extra flavor.  KY3

  • Danielle King of Ozarks Sports Zone and KMIZ-TV sports director Natalie Jones discussed a hectic week on KY3 — Mizzou’s basketball team remains undefeated in SEC play while the women’s gymnastics team builds on its Final 4 success.  KY3
